Guide to Debt Consolidation for Students
If you are struggling with debt and are either in college or have recently graduated, you may want to consider debt consolidation. This is a process that allows you to take all of your debts, whether they are student credit card debts or non credit based student loans you used for your education, and combine them into one larger loan with just one monthly payment. But before you sign up for a loan consolidation program, you should learn a little bit about what they entitle.
College debt is an accepted part of today's society. No matter how hard we work and save, most of us cannot afford to pay for a college education without some form of credit. On top of this, we live in a global credit card society, which means that students are bombarded with credit card applications. As a result, when many college students face graduation they are burdened with unprecedented amounts of debt.
If the debt is not on credit cards, students may be able to apply for the federal student loan consolidation program. This student loan debt consolidation program allows students to take their existing variable rate federal loans and transfer them into one fixed rate loan. The student consolidation loan interest rate may be higher than the variable rates are, but the rate will never increase. Also, there is just one payment each month, rather than several. If you are struggling with your federal student loans, this student loans consolidation option is a good idea. This does not, however, deal with any student credit card debts that the student may be dealing with. This program is only a college consolidation debt loan designed to help the student manage the federal loans he may have received while in school. Those who are struggling with credit cards will need to seek something besides a student loan consolidation.
Credit card debt can be consolidated through several types of loans, most of which come from a bank or credit card company. However, students may have trouble getting these loans because they have little to no credit history. If you are able to get one of these loans, then consider carefully whether or not it is a good idea for you financially. If you have bad credit, you will be offered a consolidation loan with high interest rates. While your monthly payment may be lower than what you are currently paying towards your credit cards, over the life of the loan you will pay hundreds, or even thousands, more than you would if you continued to pay down your credit cards as they are now. This is what makes consolidation loans so dangerous, particularly for poor students. Many students think that having that lower monthly payment will help them dig their way out of debt, but in the long run they will be paying more for the loan. If, however, the interest rate you are being offered on the consolidation loan is lower than what you are currently paying on your credit cards, then you need to seriously think about debt consolidation as the answer to your credit card struggle, provided you can stop spending once you get the loan.
